News: Desperate Housewives Season 8 to be last - Vanessa Williams confirms the "rumors are true"

Following on from my post about Desperate Housewives' Brenda Strong stating that Season 8 would be the final year, it seems that it is pretty much the case.

EW has recently reported that the ABC show will end in May, 2012, and also that the core cast of the show, which still comprises of Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher and Eva Longoria was shocked by the decision - as was creator Marc Cherry.

However, fans and non-fans will probably agree that it is best that the show ends while it's still moderately popular and is at least near the top of its game in terms of storytelling.

... And if you needed any more confirmation of the show's end, here's Vanessa Williams telling fans the "rumors are true", this will be the "final season of a landmark show".

News: "We know it's [likely] the final year" - Desperate Housewive's Brenda Strong Confirms Season 8 Looks Like The End

Note: Some spoilers for Australian readers...

In an interview with TV Guide about her character (Mary Alice Young) and her role on the ABC show Desperate Housewives, Brenda Strong has again reiterated that the cast and crew and prepping for the end of the show.

She reveals that she will have more screen time in the shows eighth season, in what will be a busy year for Strong, she will also be appearing on the new Dallas.

Here's what she has to say about the season's central mystery:
"My presence will be woven in more as a series bookend since we know it's [likely] the final year... Flashbacks will provide some new Young family information that will culminate in an amazing finale."
It's probably the right time to end the show, as although ratings are strong, they are gradually slipping year by year. The show is almost as creatively strong as it has ever been, but there's no point waiting until it goes off the boil- let it end on a high.

Season eight will again feature Vanessa Williams reprising her role as René.

The only questions that remain pertain to the way the show will end - will it dare break up any of the relationships of Susan/Mike, Gabrielle/Carlos and surely Lynette/Tom will reunite by the end of the season...

Australian fans of Desperate Housewives might have been wondering what happened to Dana Delany after she left the show in its sixth season...

Well, it turns out she was rightly snapped up by another ABC (US) show in Body of Proof, which is coming soon to Seven.

  • Desperate Housewives will be adding another male regular to the cast in Season 8 (on top of the already great addition of Jonathon Cake as Bree's new love interest).

  • Hawaii Five-O will also bag another Lost alumnus in the form of Terry O'Quinn (who played John Locke in the hit ABC show). It's also good to see him on TV in some capacity after the Marc Cherry-helmed Hallelujah pilot fell through earlier this year.

  • Mad Men has locked down its most valuable asset in Jon Hamm for another three seasons- virtually assuring that the show will run through to Season 7. However, its future after that is on very shaky ground, with the strong word being that it won't continue much further after its seventh season.

  • The Walking Dead has cast (another) racist survivor for its second season, set to return in October 2011. His name is Otis and will be played by Pruitt Taylor Vince of The Mentalist fame.
